Roof repair in Cincinnati

Most roof trouble here starts small: a few tabs lifted by a summer gust, a vent boot that cracked after a dozen winters, a chimney flashing that let go on a 1920s house. Fixed early, those stay cheap. Tell us what you see and a roofer who works your part of the county calls back.

The repairs roofers see most around here

  • Wind-lifted shingles. Hamilton County logged damaging thunderstorm or high wind on 193 days from 1996 to 2025, about 6.4 a year, which is more than twice as often as hail. Wind can break a shingle's seal without tearing it off, and the loose tab starts leaking a season later.
  • Chimney and wall flashing. 73% of homes in the county's ZIP codes were built before 1980, and a lot of them have brick chimneys. The metal that seals the joint between brick and roof loosens with freeze and thaw, and old tar patches crack.
  • Pipe boots. The rubber collar around a plumbing vent splits with age. Small part, small price, large share of small leaks.
  • Slipped or broken slate. Common on prewar houses in Hyde Park, Clifton, Northside and Norwood. A slate roof is usually repaired piece by piece, not replaced. How slate repair works.
  • Soft decking. If a spot feels spongy, water has been reaching the wood. That part is usually priced per sheet.

Fixing a sound roof is almost always worth it. The math changes when the roof is near the end of its life or the damage covers several slopes. How to decide.

Before anyone comes out

  1. Take pictures from the yard and from the attic. Cincinnati roofs are steep and lots are hilly; leave the climbing to the roofer.
  2. Write down the storm date if there was one.
  3. Find your declarations page. If a claim is possible, your deductible decides whether it makes sense.

Questions for the roofer

  • What failed, and can you show me a picture of it?
  • Will a repair hold, or is the roof past that point?
  • If the house is inside Cincinnati: is your company registered with the city? The City of Cincinnati requires every contractor working inside city limits to hold a current contractor registration, renewed each year, under Municipal Code Chapter 1106. How to check.
  • What warranty covers this repair, and can I have it in writing?

Questions people around Cincinnati ask

Can a roofer fix only part of the roof?

Yes. Most repairs replace the damaged shingles, slates, flashing or boots and leave the rest. On an older asphalt roof the color may not match exactly, since shingle lines get discontinued. Ask how close the match will be.

Do I need a permit for a roof repair in Cincinnati?

Usually not for a house. The City of Cincinnati says re-covering a roof on a detached house generally does not need a building permit if the house has one to three units and no more than two layers of roofing material. If the city has designated the property or building as historic, you need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Urban Conservator (513-352-4848) before work starts, even if no permit is needed.

Will a few missing shingles leak?

Often, especially in wind-driven rain. The underlayment is a backup layer, not a roof. Get missing shingles replaced soon after the storm.
