Cincinnati roof data: home age by ZIP and the storm record

The age of a house says more about its roof than the weather does around here. 25% of the 380,923 homes in these 47 Hamilton County ZIP codes were built before 1940 and 73% before 1980. Storms come second: NOAA logged damaging wind on 193 days and hail on 79 days in the county from 1996 to 2025.

Homes by ZIP code

A house from the 1990s has probably had one roof replacement already. One from the 1920s may have its original slate, or two layers of shingles over plank boards. Area labels are our shorthand for the main neighborhoods or towns in each ZIP.

How we built this

Homes. US Census American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates by ZIP Code Tabulation Area, through Census Reporter, for 47 ZCTAs in Hamilton County. Built before 1940 is table B25034's "1939 or earlier" row. ZCTA center points come from the Census 2024 Gazetteer.

Storms. NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database bulk detail files, 1996 through 2026, filtered to Hamilton County, Ohio. We count reports, distinct dates with at least one report, and the largest size. Wind combines thunderstorm wind and high wind. For the area table we also count hail reports from the neighboring counties in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, so areas near the county line are not undercounted. The 2026 file runs through July 2026 because NOAA publishes a few months behind.

Disasters. OpenFEMA Disaster Declarations Summaries for Hamilton County, one row per declaration.

Limits. ACS figures are survey estimates with margins of error, largest in small ZIPs. A storm report depends on someone being there to measure it. Neither can say what is on your roof.

Reuse. Reporters and inspectors may cite or republish these charts and tables with a link back to this page (CC BY 4.0). Updated October 29, 2026.
